He is torn between his desire to leave his tragic and tortured past behind and his devoted commitment to his job as the village doctor in Yartbrooke, Devon – the place of his birth.

His life has been marked by trauma and loss – even his successes have been overshadowed by the fear that his dreadful past will never let him find happiness. When he arrives at his surgery on the day he is due to retire he fears the worst. The village has been torn apart by strife and controversy and Gerry Gibbings has been at the centre of it. Yet on his last day the whole village, previously divided in its loyalties, offers Gerry Gibbings its forgiveness and support.

But even now he is troubled – the stress of the recent turmoil in the village plays on his mind, testing his sanity. After a difficult day seeing his patients for the last time as their family doctor, he sits alone at his consulting-room desk and lapses into a reverie which takes him back to his earliest memories.

He becomes once again the carefree young son of a cowman on Mr Kingwell’s farm – a solitary little boy who delighted in exploring the meadows around his parents’ tied cottage. But at the age of just seven years old young Gerry Gibbings’ life is changed forever by a calamitous event which tears away the enchantment of childhood.

Gerry and his mother are left emotionally damaged by their experiences, and at far too young an age he feels compelled to assume a caring role towards his psychologically vulnerable mother. Thus he begins a difficult and hazardous journey towards adulthood and independence, the ordeals of his childhood softened only by his growing attachment to the village of Yartbrooke and its inhabitants.
